Time Adverbs – Time Expressions

At a certain point in time: um

um 5 Uhr (at 5 o’clock)

on a certain day: an

an einem Tag (one day), an einem schönen Tag (on a nice day)
am Montag (on Monday)

Parts of the day: an

am Nachmittag (in the afternoon), am Vormittag (in the morning – between 8 and 12 o’clock am.), am Morgen (in the morning – before 8 o’clock am.), am Abend (in the evening)
exceptions: in der Früh (early), in der Nacht (at night); zu Mittag (at noon), zu Mitternacht (at midnight)

Note: Separately morgen means “tomorrow”: Morgen gehe ich nicht arbeiten (Tomorrow I won’t go to work). Am Morgen gehe ich nicht arbeiten (In the morning I won’t go to work).

The day and a part of the day together, without a preposition:

heute Nachmittag (this afternoon), Dienstag  Nachmittag (on Tuesday afternoon), morgen früh (tomorrow morning)

The genitive is used in the following idiomatic expression: eines Tages (approximately the same as an einem Tag, see above)

Expressions with diese, vorige, nächste are used either with the accusative without any preposition or with the preposition in + dative:

diese Woche – this week
vorige Woche – last week
nächste Woche – next week

dieses Jahr ( = in diesem Jahr) – this year
voriges Jahr ( = im vorigen Jahr) – last year
nächstes Jahr ( = im nächsten Jahr) – next year

diesen Monat – in this month

Seasons: im

im Frühling (in spring)
im Sommer
im Herbst (in autumn)
im Winter

For holidays: zu

zu Weihnachten (at Christmas)
zu Ostern (at Easter)

Expressing the date

before days: an

am 8. November 2008 (on 8th November)

or: den 8. November 2008 (on 8th November)

before months: im

im März – in March

Next to Anfang, Ende, Mitte the name of the month stands without any preposition:

Anfang März – at the beginning of March
Mitte Juni – in the middle of June
Ende Oktober – at the end of October

Before year numbers: nothing or “im Jahre” (retained from an archaic form):

2012 – in 2012
im Jahre 2012 – in 2012

Er ist 2012 geboren. Er ist im Jahre 2012 geboren. (He was born in 2012.)
